ADK’s 56th fall outing 2004 was co-hosted by the Genesee Valley and Niagara Frontier chapters on September 17, 18, and 19th. Participants stayed in Henrietta, NY, a few miles below Rochester, enjoyed a very good buffet Saturday night at the Green Lantern Inn in Fairport and took advantage of over 40 hiking, biking, canoeing and walking events ranging from the Niagara Falls area to the west to Taughannock Falls State Park to the southeast near Ithacas, and including Letchworth State Park, the Erie Canal, and many other Finger Lakes locales.

Attendance was well over 100, including myself and one other from LI, a youngster form Patchogue (whose name eludes me), and Carol Mantell, and at-large member.

My interest was Letchworth (about 45 minutes below Henrietta) as I had visited briefly in the early 80’s. So Carol and I joined a 9-mile hike on Saturday and a 6-miler on Saturday, resulting in these pictures. The park features a deep gorge cut by the Genesee River, which flows north from PA to Lake Ontario. Hurricanes to the south caused heavy rain in the river’s source and raised it to levels never seen before by local ADK’ers. And its normally clear water was muddy as a result. Both hikes featured some bushwhacking or hillside scrambling, and the pace was moderate as we stopped often to take in the views.
