SAMS POINT PRESERVE - April 13, 2003 Jeff Ritter introduced us to Sams Point Preserve, a beautiful area on the west side of Minnewaska State Park, to make us aware of a threat to this natural setting. An owner of land close to Sam's Point Preserve is contemplating selling it for luxury housing, golf course, etc. which will truly destroy the sweeping natural state we saw from so many viewpoints. With a minimal amount of elevation gain, everyone enjoyed a day of fun covering more than 9 miles on a gloriously sunny day including a relaxing lunch spot at Verkeerder Kill Falls pictured here. This outing was a special treat even for so many experienced hikers who somehow had never been to Sam's Point. Check it out yourself using the Shawangunk Trails Map #9 that will show the areas of Minnewaska and Sams Point Preserve. Jeff was joined by Susan & Denis Stricker & their friend Gordon Pettit, Richard Furman, Yoshiko Takeshita, Steve List, Lou Visconti, John Lynch and Arlene Scholer, reporter. We concluded our day with a relaxing dinner hour at a local Italian restaurant. How sweet it was!
